About Gov Contract Index

Gov Contract Index publishes the federal contract award record one company at a time. It exists because the record is public and complete, and finding what a single company has won still means driving a search form that was built for analysts.

Where the data comes from

Every figure on this site comes from USAspending.gov, the U.S. Treasury's award data published under the DATA Act. It is a work of the US Government and in the public domain. We read the Treasury's own API and republish what it returns, unchanged apart from the layout and the arithmetic we describe below.

One page per company, keyed on the entity ID

A company page is addressed by its Unique Entity ID — the twelve-character identifier the government registers a company under — and not by its name. Two unrelated firms share a name, one firm files under four spellings, and the DUNS number it used before 2022 is absent from newer registrations. The UEI is the only thing in the record that identifies one company and one company only, so it is the last part of every URL here.

What the figure on a page means

Amounts are obligations net of de-obligations: money an agency committed, less money it later released. That is the number the government keeps, and it is not revenue, not profit and not a measure of a company's size. It also has a scope: the record is filed at several levels, and a parent company's figure counts its subsidiaries while a single entity's does not. We publish one page per company and say on it, in words, which of the two you are looking at — showing both without saying so is how the same money gets counted twice.

What we deliberately do not do

We do not rank companies as vendors, score them, or infer anything about how they performed. We do not publish a company whose net obligations are too small to say anything with, and we do not show a negative total as if it were a win. Where the record is thin, the page says so rather than filling the space.

Corrections

If a page disagrees with USAspending.gov, that is a bug and we want to know: tell us with the UEI and what you expected. Errors in the award record itself have to be raised with the agency that reported it.
